Any
qualified elector who is either unable or unwilling to appear at the
polling place on election day may request to vote an absentee ballot. To
be considered a qualified elector, you must be a U.S. citizen, you must
be age 18 or older on election day, and you need to have resided in the
ward or municipality where you wish to vote for at least ten (10) days
prior to the election. Additionally, if voter registration is required,
you must also be registered.
TO OBTAIN AN
ABSENTEE BALLOT, YOU MUST MAKE A REQUEST IN WRITING
Contact your Municipal
Clerk and request that an application for an
absentee ballot be sent to you for an upcoming primary or general
election or both. You may also request an absentee ballot by letter.
Your written request must list your voting address within the
municipality where you wish to vote, the address where the absentee
ballot is to be mailed, if different, and your signature.
Special absentee
voting application provisions apply to electors who are indefinitely
confined at home or a care facility, in the military, hospitalized, or
serving as a sequestered juror. If this applies to you, contact
your Municipal Clerk.
The deadline for
making an application to vote absentee by mail is 4:30 p.m. on the
Friday preceding the primary or general election.
The deadline for
voting an absentee ballot in the Municipal Clerk's office is 4:30pm
on the Monday preceding the primary or general election.
All absentee ballots
must be returned to the Municipal Clerk's office
so that the ballots can be delivered to the proper polling place before
the polls close on election day.
Any ballots that are
received after the closing of the polls will not be counted.
